meet zola! What a lovely girl I am! My wiggly butt never stops moving, and I live only to please. I am very friendly, smart (I know some obedience) and gregarious - everything that makes a great companion! I came from another shelter and am counting the days until I get adopted. Aristole spent one year here waiting for his WONDERFUL forever home. Here is his story! you'll love this! My husband Nathan and I first saw Aristotle sitting stoically in the midst of doggie chaos in the midst of Petpalooza. Nathan, who has always wanted a Husky and Pit Bull, was instantly interested in trying to see if we could make this Husky/Pit Bull mix a member of our family. The one catch was we had to make sure that Lucy, our lovable mutt who was not so good at socializing with other 4 legged friends, would be okay with this. Everyone encouraged us to bring her in to see how they would do. A week and many visits later (where Lucy progressively seemed to accept that this hyper boy was, in fact, okay and could be fun to play with), we brought “Stotle” home—his big ears blocking my rearview the whole way as he sat up quietly in the back seat. Over the past couple of weeks the two have engaged in numerous wrestling matches, with Stotle going from crouching down like a cat to pouncing in the air towards her. They race each other around the house, taking turns chasing after one another before curling up to sleep in their respective favorite places (Lucy on the couch, Stotle on Lucy’s old bed!).

I am a big lanky teenager who is all legs! I am very friendly, and extremely good natured. I love other dogs, and can be quite gentle with the little ones. I have become a favorite at HSC and everyone can't wait to see me find my forever home. It will have to be a special one because I have some special problems. It has been discovered that I have multiple joint issues, including hip dysplasia. Because of my medical problems, I will need to be on medicines for the rest of my life. I haven't let things get me down though! I still run and play, and want to join in the fun. Please be sure and ask and the animal caretakers will be glad to tell you all about me!

A year ago I entered the Humane Society of Charlotte. I am not sure what it is, but people seem to walk past me. I think it is because I get too excited in my cage. Please don’t let my excitement bother you… if you meet me outside of my run I am a different dog. I get to go on “sleep-over’s” with an employee of the Humane Society of Charlotte and she says I am an absolute doll in a home environment. I am great with dogs and have a healthy respect for cats. I have lived with young children in the past and love EVERYONE so I would be good for a family or a single person. Be sure to check out my additional photos!

I just read an article from one of Charlotte's TV stations - WSOC - it says thousands of animals need help - if I understand correctly this is a kill shelter.You know what makes me the most angry - why isn't someone (with a paid position or someone in a position to volunteer (that doesn't already have to work 2+ jobs)go out and educate these IDIOTS that are not spaying and neutering these helpless animals?? he is the sweetest guy, already neutered, loving, he's 4, very comfortable with me, not afraid at all, fun, got in my lap, i fell in love of course, he's little, they think he's part jack russell and beagle ~ he didn't bark so i couldn't tell on the beagle part, the markings were there as you see. his family "had" to give him up because they were moving ~ yea whatever. i took some things (blankets and a printer)over to the Humane Society of Charlotte and had been thinking that a brother would help annie and had seen him on the site so i asked to meet him, we sat & played in an office just me and him for a long time. then ~ i call annie's vet in winston salem for advice. he said it would probably be good and offered the option of taking her to a dog behaviorist too. so i'm thinking $$cha ching$$ ~ yep! but not too bad ~ for blood work prior it is "about" $80, then the specialist is $200, then heaven knows what that outcome will bring $$$$. she's also due for her yearly shots $$cha ching$$ at least $200 and waaaay past due for a haircut ~ $50 (hey - priorities, ya know) and she hasn't even been to daycare since we moved. $$$$ dang $$$$ and she's already on dog anxiety meds, i know what you're thinking ~ good gosh look who she lives with ~ well, she's a whole lot better off with me, i promise! i better buy & win some lottery tickets this week. cha ching!

As you will see, Semper is one lucky baby as very proudly shared by Carole Lyons ~ Semper celebrated her 12th birthday on December 28th, 2007. "John and I got Semper when she was about 9 weeks old from a person who was delivering medical supplies in Sulligent, AL. They had 4 or 5 puppies and I wanted one so they told me I could have her. I picked her because she was so fat and cuddly. We picked her name on our way back to Tuscaloosa because she rode in John's Marine helmet that was in the car, and looked so cute. Semper Fidelis (gosh, I misspelled that -) means always faithful, a Marine thing. She was a wild puppy living with a college student. She chewed up all kinds of things including a pair of $100 Birkenstocks and some Teva sandals. She ate the cushions off my sofa, pulled up the carpet because of a little string that she played with, and she clawed up the floor in a bathroom because John left her in it to go to a college party. She was a terrible 2 for about 3 years! She hates to be outside, unless we are all out there. So she has always been an indoor dog. She loves to travel and is GREAT with her 3 boys, my kids! She thinks she is the "nana" because when someone has ever held one of my babies she stares at them until I get the baby back. She also has to go out after each person in the house wakes up in the morning, so the door opens and closes about 5 times each morning. She sleeps on my side of the bed, follows my every step and loves me the best. As you can tell, I am so proud to be her mama. I love her to death, even when she barks at us when we come home."

When I was rescued, I was so matted you could hardly see me! Then, while I was being groomed, it was discovered that I had a very large area of scarring on my back. I wish I could tell you what happened, but at least that is in the past. I am sporting my new 'doo, and am ready to start a new life of love, gentle handling and hopefully lots of spoiling! it's happened AGAIN - - dogs from a hillsville, virginia (a very small town) puppy mill are now at the charlotte humane society. this time the owner had 1,000 dogs - all of which were removed - thank heaven. it was located just 14 miles from the border of north carolina. i just don't understand how not one single person knew this was going on??? hillsville is a very, very small town - you know - the kind where everyone knows everyone and all of their business too - come on people - stop turning a blind eye - report these things. visit the humane society of charlotte for more information on how to adopt these rescued babies click on this information for details on adopting this baby I've had a bit of a tough time lately...my owner passed away and I was rescued by a wonderful veterinarian. I was quite sickly and thin, and was found to have heartworms. I am treated now, and soon will be ready to start my new life. My health is really improving and I am getting my energy back every day! You may not see me outside (I have to stay quiet after my treatment) but you can ask to see me. I am friendly and kinda quiet...just the perfect dog to snuggle up with on the couch. you know, this really makes me very angry, i hope it makes you angry too. pray tell, how can this happen? how could these babies get this bad and not one single soul know about it - someone, somehow had to know ~ the mailman, the neigbors, people coming to buy dogs, the person that owned the 30 something dogs, a vet, a family member ~ somebody knew ~ i imagine a lot of people knew and they turned a blind eye. the smell, the barking, crying ~ and not one single person knew? come on ~ those people are just as guilty. the people they name that purchased 3 dogs from her have to be just plain s t u p i d ~ s t u p i d ~ s t u p i d. something has got to be done, this can't continue. I am mad ~ ~ very, very mad. i'm writing all the folks in government positions, beginning with the city, county and state i live in ~ i want them to fund an agency (or one of these major player companies, there are plenty of people in charlotte, nc that could donate to make this happen) to go out & investigate and keep a watchful eye until this never happens again. i will head it up, i want to be the leader and i want to start now. what are you going to do to help? mail me and i'll send you a sample of what i write to help get you started. help me make a difference for these helpless living beings. look at those eyes, they didn't deserve this and to think it didn't have to happen. read the article below from raleigh's newspaper. A civil injunction is expected to be filed in Wake County (Raleigh, NC ~ capital of NC)this morning to permanently prevent the return of 100-plus animals confiscated from Janie Conyers' home this month. Wake County animal cruelty investigators seized 106 dogs, including about 80 toy poodles, and nine birds from Conyers' home, 8252 Holly Springs Road in Raleigh, on Oct. 19. They wrote in search warrants that the home was full of animal urine and feces and that it was infested with cockroaches. The Animal Legal Defense Fund, a nonprofit group dedicated to preventing animal cruelty, is listed as a plaintiff on the motion. Also listed are the county and Kelli Ferris, an animal cruelty investigator who also works as a veterinarian with N.C. State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Ferris was one of the investigators who responded after a person who had taken a dog to Conyers' home for breeding complained about the animals' living conditions. Conyers, 77, a breeder of champion AKC poodles, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night. "This is our way to go in as a private organization to make sure these animals are not returned to the conditions they came from," Animal Legal Defense Fund spokeswoman Lisa Franzetta said Tuesday. "It's clear that these animals have been suffering in an environment that would constitute criminal animal cruelty." Lover, one of the dogs seized from the home, is described in the affidavit as having severe medical issues brought about from the lack of care he received. "[He] was soaked in urine when removed from [Conyers'] home," the affidavit notes. "... Half his jaw had completely disintegrated from infection and decay; ... his coat was soiled and matted with old and new feces and urine, as well as dried pus from his mouth." The motion asks that Conyers be barred from owning another animal for 10 years after a decision is made. It also seeks repayment from her for costs incurred by the county for services including medical treatment, food and shelter. News of the seizures was shocking to several dog owners who have purchased their animals from Conyers. "She's not a puppy mill," said Fuji Daussin, who has purchased three poodles from Conyers over the past seven years. "I guess they just got out of hand." Daussin said he and his wife, Sandra, found Conyers through an Internet search when they decided to add a dog to their household. They purchased Sophie, a female black-haired poodle, in 2000. They later purchased 4-year-old poodle Reuben and 2-year-old Muffin, a toy poodle. He said Conyers would care for the poodles when the family took trips. He said he never saw anything out of hand. "[The dogs] were happy," he said. "They all have great personalities. She knew all their names. This is just a blip on the screen of a long career." Michael Williams, director of Wake County Animal Care, Control and Adoption, said Tuesday that the next step after the motion is filed is that possible criminal charges would be discussed with the Wake County district attorney. Most of the animals already have been put in the care of foster owners, he said. Thirty-nine of the dogs in Conyers' care were owned by someone else, Williams said. That owner has already signed the dogs over to the county. Exactly how many dogs are involved in the case will continue to fluctuate. Two dogs have either died or been euthanized since the seizure, Franzetta said.
